This shielding is essential to limit the spread of the 0.5mT (5 Gauss) magnetic field line, protecting sensitive medical equipment and reducing risks for individuals with pacemakers and implants. If the magnetic field extends beyond the designated room, it could pose significant dangers to the surrounding public.
The strength of the magnetic field is highest at the magnets centre, or isocentre, and diminishes with distance, known as the fringe field, typically measured in milli Tesla (mT) or gauss (G). It is important to note that 0.5mT is equivalent to 5G.
